Understanding GST in India
Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a single indirect tax applied to most goods and services in India. Sellers add GST to the sale price and remit it to the government. For sales within a state it splits equally into CGST and SGST; for inter-state sales a single IGST applies.
Add vs remove GST
Add GST: total = amount × (1 + rate/100). Remove GST: base = amount ÷ (1 + rate/100). The difference is the tax, which this calculator splits into CGST and SGST.
The rate slabs
| Slab | Typical goods |
|---|---|
| 5% | Essentials, transport, small restaurants |
| 12% | Processed food, business-class travel |
| 18% | Most goods and services |
| 28% | Luxury items, automobiles (plus cess on some) |
Worked example
A service priced at ₹10,000 plus 18% GST costs the customer ₹11,800. The ₹1,800 tax is recorded as ₹900 CGST and ₹900 SGST. Working backward, ₹11,800 inclusive of 18% GST has a base price of exactly ₹10,000.
How to use this calculator
Enter the amount, choose add or remove, and pick the rate (5/12/18/28%). The result shows the base, total, GST amount, and the CGST/SGST split instantly.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add GST to an amount?
Multiply the base amount by (1 + rate/100). For example, ₹10,000 at 18% becomes ₹11,800. The GST portion is ₹1,800, split equally into ₹900 CGST and ₹900 SGST for intra-state sales.
How do I remove GST from a total?
Divide the GST-inclusive amount by (1 + rate/100) to get the base. For ₹11,800 at 18%, the base is ₹10,000 and the GST is ₹1,800. This is useful for reverse-calculating the pre-tax price.
What is the CGST and SGST split?
For sales within a state, GST is split equally into Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST). For inter-state sales, a single Integrated GST (IGST) applies at the same total rate instead.
What are the GST rate slabs in India?
The main slabs are 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. Essentials are taxed lower; luxury and 'sin' goods sit at 28% and may attract an additional compensation cess that this calculator does not include.
Does this calculator include cess?
No. Some 28% items (and a few others) carry an extra compensation cess. This tool computes only the standard CGST/SGST/IGST portion.
Who needs to charge GST?
Businesses with turnover above the registration threshold must register and charge GST. Thresholds vary by state and business type — check current rules or consult an accountant.
